Nerve Conduction Studies

Your physician may order a nerve conduction study to assess nerve or muscle damage or diagnose the cause of pain in certain areas, such as carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrist.

A nerve conduction study determines how well the body’s electrical signals are traveling across a nerve. This is done by applying small electrical shocks to the nerve and recording how the nerve works. These shocks cause a quick, mild, tingling feeling.
